SL vs AUS: Steve Smith scores 36th Test hundred, climbs to joint-fifth in all-time list

Steve Smith scored his 36th Test hundred during the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Galle International Stadium on Friday.

The Australian batter rose to joint-fifth in the all-time list, joining Rahul Dravid and Joe Root. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 51 Test hundreds.

During the first Test, he became the 15th player to complete 10,000 runs in the format and the fourth from his country to do so, after Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting.

Among active players, Smith now ranks second behind Joe Root, who has 12,972 Test runs. The 35-year-old Australian walked in to bat after the visitors stumbled to 37 for two, with Marnus Labuschagne once again failing to make it count.

Smith stitched together a 150-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey to take Australia past Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 257 with seven wickets in hand.
