South African batter David Miller broke former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s record of scoring the fastest century in Champions Trophy history on Wednesday (March 5). During the second semifinal match of the Champions Trophy 2025, which was played between New Zealand and South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Miller scored 100 runs from 67 balls. He crossed the 100-run mark by running two runs on the final ball of the match.

Sehwag scored a century in 77 balls against England during the 2002 Champions Trophy match played against England at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis equalled Sehwag’s record by scoring a century in 77 balls against England during the 2025 Champions Trophy Group B match played at Gaddafi Stadium on February 22.

Fastest 100s in Champions Trophy

  • David Miller (South Africa): 67 balls vs New Zealand in Lahore (2025)
  • Virender Sehwag (India): 77 balls vs England in Colombo (2002)
  • Josh Inglis (Australia): 77 balls vs England in Lahore (2025)
  • Shikhar Dhawan (India): 80 balls vs South Africa in Cardiff (2013)
  • Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka): 87 balls vs South Africa in Centurion (2009)

During his stay at the crease against the Black Caps, Miller hammered 10 fours and four sixes, but his effort went in vain as South Africa went on to lose the match by 50 runs.

The Proteas were asked to chase down the target of 363 runs in 50 overs, but they could only manage to score 312 runs for the loss of nine wickets.

The margin of defeat would have been a lot bigger had Miller has not scored runs at a quick pace in the last four overs. He added an unbeaten 66 runs in 27 balls for the last wicket with Lungi Ngidi, and in that partnership, Ngidi only contributed 1 run from two balls.

Apart from Miller, captain Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen also scored half-centuries for the South African team.

For the Kiwis, captain Mitchell Santner picked up three wickets for 43 runs in his quota of 10 overs, and two South African batters each were sent back to the pavilion by Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips.

Earlier in the first half, Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson scored centuries to help the Kiwis post a total of 363 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. The century in Lahore was Rachin’s fifth in ICC tournaments for the Black Caps, and it also helped him break multiple batting records. The 25-year-old cricketer also picked up one wicket in the match, and for his superb all-round show, he won the Player of the Match award.
