In his first Indian Premier League (IPL) match after three years, Karun Nair played one of the best IPL knocks of all time for Delhi Capitals (DC), but his effort went in vain as Mumbai Indians (MI) made a memorable comeback in the IPL 2025 match played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi to seal a 12-run win.
The 33-year-old right-handed batter scored 89 runs from just 40 balls for the Axar Patel-led side on Sunday night at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground, but his wicket triggered a shocking collapse for the home team, and despite cruising at 135/2 in 11.3 overs at one point, they could only manage to score 193 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 19 overs.
Karn Sharma, after coming on as an impact sub in place of Rohit Sharma, finished with figures of 3 for 36 in four overs. The leg-spinner removed Abhishek Porel (33 from 25) to break the 119-run stand for the second wicket between him and Nair and then removed Tristan Stubbs (1) and KL Rahul (15) as well.
He was ably supported by New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner, who finished with figures of 2 for 42 in four overs. Santner clean bowled Karun on the fourth ball of the 12th over of the run chase and then, in his last over, got Vipraj Nigam stumped out by Ryan Rickelton for 14 runs from 8 balls.
DC needed 23 runs from the last two overs, and Ashutosh hit Jasprit Bumrah for two fours on the second and third balls to add spice to the match, but on the fourth one, in an attempt to take two runs, he got run out. On the fifth ball, Kuldeep Yadav also got run out in an attempt to take two runs, and on the last ball of the 19th over. Mohit Sharma also got run out, which stunned everyone present at the iconic stadium in Delhi.
The defeat on Sunday was DC‘s first loss in IPL 2025, and for MI, it was their second win of the season.
Earlier in the first half, after being invited to bat first, MI rode on a second fifty in a row from Tilak Varma to post a total of 205 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets. The left-handed batter from Hyderabad, who was retired out by the Mumbai-based franchise during their fourth league match against the Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Stadium, scored 59 runs from 33 balls. During his stay at the crease, the 22-year-old hammered six fours and three sixes.
Tilak added 60 runs from 33 balls for the third wicket with Suryakumar Yadav (40 runs from 28 balls) and 62 runs from 33 balls for the fifth wicket with Naman (38 from 17 balls).
For Mumbai, apart from the three Indian batters, wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton scored 41 off 25 balls. The stumper from South Africa helped MI get off to a great start by adding 47 runs for the first wicket with Rohit Sharma. Rohit was sent back to the pavilion for 18 runs from 12 balls by Vipraj Nigam on the last ball of the fifth over.
Vipraj, who got Virat Kohli’s wicket in the last match, trapped Rohit in front of the wickets. Before returning back to the dugout, Rohit smashed Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc for two fours and one six in the third over.
Starc, after making a superb start for DC in the ongoing season of the IPL, once again remained wicketless on Sunday and conceded 43 runs in his quota of three overs.
For the hosts, Kuldeep Yadav once again was the best bowler of the night. The 30-year-old spinner from Kanpur only conceded 23 runs in his quota of four overs and got the prized wickets of Rickelton and Surya. While Rickelton was clean bowled by Kuldeep, Surya was caught by Starc.
Nigam finished with figures of 2 for 41 in four, and Tilak was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar (1/38 in four overs).
