India’s think tank recently met with officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a review meeting, during which opinions were sought on managing the transition period in a phased manner.
However, while announcing the squad for the Champions Trophy on Saturday, Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the selection committee, clarified that discussions about the transition phase would take place only after the ICC event concludes in March.
“It’s a month away from the Champions Trophy. These guys have been exceptional performers in one-day cricket. Unfortunately, we haven’t had too much one-day cricket this year. We’ll see once the Champions Trophy is done. We’ve got a bit more time to sit and assess where everyone is at. It’s not just about one or two players, but where we go forward,” Agarkar said.
India played just three ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2024, losing the series 0-2. However, before heading to Dubai for the Champions Trophy, the team will host England for a three-match ODI series next month.
“At the moment, the focus is on one-day cricket and Champions trophy. We reached the World Cup final that we played last time (in 2023). We know the quality that these guys bring and the experience that these guys bring. At the moment, with regards to any player in the team, the focus is completely Champions Trophy,” the chairman of the selection committee stated.
