India’s emphatic victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has not only added another feather to their cap but also reinforced Rohit Sharma’s stature as a leader and fearless batter.
India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets in the final on Sunday. The Indian skipper’s aggressive intent at the top of the order coupled with his shrewd captaincy played a pivotal role in India’s win, earning praise from former cricketers including legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram.
Rohit Sharma played an explosive knock of 76 runs in the final against New Zealand, helping India chase down the target of 252 with ease. He was named the Player of the Match for his game-changing innings. Rohit displayed similar batting approach during the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, winning the latter by beating South Africa in the final.
Wasin Akram and Ajay Jadeja laud Rohit Sharma fearless approach
Speaking on Ten Sports’ Dressing Room show, Akram was in awe of Rohit’s ability to dominate bowlers in the powerplay. “Rohit Sharma, what a player. In the last four years, he has hit 70 sixes in the powerplay alone. And even today, the way he was batting, effortless. He has a lot of time, which is a natural thing,” Akram remarked.
Rohit’s fearless approach was on full display throughout the tournament, as he set the tone for India’s innings with aggressive starts, often dismantling opposition bowlers in the first 10 overs without caring about his own wicket. Apart from his batting prowess, Rohit’s leadership skills also came under the spotlight. Under his captaincy, India remained composed under pressure situations and executed their plans perfectly. India went on to win the Champions Trophy without losing a single game.
Former India cricketer and analyst Ajay Jadeja joined Akram in hailing Rohit’s contributions. “He hits sixes with his timing, not just with strength. He has the skill. His sixes go from point to deep fine leg, he plays everywhere. If a batter hits shots in just one direction, as a bowler, you can try to avoid bowling in his area. But if a batter can play in every direction, where will the bowler go? If you give him room, he will hit over point, over covers, and in front as well. He picks seamers very well. You can ask any seamer, if a batter picks his length, it becomes very difficult for the bowler. They tend to go a little short, but that only makes it easier for Rohit.”
