India’s semi-final history in Champions Trophy
India’s first-ever Champions Trophy semi-final appearance in Dhaka in 1998, back when the tournament was called the ICC KnockOut, ended in heartbreak. Facing the West Indies in Dhaka, Mohammad Azharuddin’s side struggled as the West Indies comfortably chased down the target with six wickets in hand.
India bounced back in style against South Africa in their second semi-final of the Champions Trophy in Nairobi in 2000. Led by Sourav Ganguly, the team displayed superb batting and posted a formidable total to beat South Africa by 95 runs.
India and South Africa met again in the semi-finals of the 2002 edition in Colombo, and this time, it was a tense affair. A gritty batting effort from India, coupled with a disciplined bowling performance, helped them clinch a narrow 10-run win.
Fast forward to 2013, and under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India once again proved their mettle in the Champions Trophy. In Cardiff, a dominant bowling performance restricted Sri Lanka to a modest total, and then a sublime partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma powered India to an eight-wicket victory.
The last time India played a Champions Trophy semi-final was in 2017 when they absolutely crushed Bangladesh in Birmingham. Chasing a target of 265, India barely broke a sweat as Rohit Sharma’s magnificent unbeaten century and Virat Kohli’s fluent knock led them to a commanding nine-wicket win.
