Congress politician Shama Mohamed put up a brave face Monday despite being forced to delete her social post in which she
“fat-shamed” Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and questioned his captaincy. Talking to the media after her social media post created a huge uproar, Shama Mohamed said she only exercised her freedom of speech.

The social media post was made by Shama Mohamed during
India’s match against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025. In her post, Shama Mohamed said: “- @ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And ofcourse the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had !”

After her tweet led to a massive controversy and allowed BP to hit back at Congress for “body-shaming” an Indian captain, Shama Mohamed deleted her social media posts. She also spoke to news agency ANI and clarified that she didn’t body-shame Rohit but was just trying to put her point across.

“It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying? It is a democracy…,” she told ANI.

BJP’s Pradeep Bhandari slams Shama Mohamed

BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari, however, did not buy Shama’s argument and said that the recent episode only showed that Congress is trying to oppose “patriotic” people.

“The Congress party is trying to send a message that every patriot, who does good for the country, will be opposed by the Congress,” Bhandari said. “They have an issue that Rohit Sharma, and Indian winning Captain, has done good for the country and defeated New Zealand…

“This also questions the patriotism of the Congress party. This is now amply clear in front of the people of India that those who support India, are patriotic, who do good for India will be opposed by the Congress party; those who speak against the country will be supported.”
