Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has said that the Punjab Kings once used to disrupt their plans by putting a spoke into their wheels and that similar behaviour has passed on to the Sunrisers Hyderabad after last year’s runner-up team slumped to a hat trick of defeats in IPL 2025.

After having lost two matches in a row post a win against Rajasthan Royals in their season opener, Hyderabad’s belligerent batting lineup was skittled for a paltry 120 runs by defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday.

Sehwag said that Punjab’s tendency to collapse seems to have been taken up by Hyderabad in IPL 2025.

“Punjab used to put a spoke in their wheels, and now it seems they have given it to Hyderabad. They made 190 and lost, then made about 160 and lost, today they couldn’t chase down 200,” Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

“Neither was (KKR’s) bowling attack nor the wicket (too difficult to deal with). They batted first and scored 200. We could see that the ball wasn’t turning; there wasn’t too much help in any way for the bowlers,” Sehwag said.

The former Indian cricketer said that Hyderabad need to be careful of not losing the unique reputation they have built.

“Hyderabad have disappointed. What can I say? They’ve got so many batters, and nobody could score runs and they get all out at 120. The paying public has come to see you,” Sehwag said.

Having endured their third consecutive defeat, Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins said on Thursday that his hard-hitting batters might need to alter their approach going into the next game.

Chasing a target of 201, Hyderabad’s batting once again faltered as they were bowled out for a paltry 120 in the 17th over to suffer a huge 80-run defeat.

“Not a great night tonight. In the mid-innings break, we thought it was gettable. It was a pretty good wicket. Gave away few too many in the field and fell short (with the bat),” Cummins said at the post-match presentation.
