Matthew Hayden ahead of Chennai Super Kings clash with LSG

Coming into the Indian Super League clash against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, five-time champions Chennai Super Kings find themselves in last spot, having lost five matches in a row after winning their IPL 2025 opener. With just two points against their name from six games, time is running out for Chennai to mount a bid for the IPL 2025 playoffs.

With the fate of their season already on the line, will CSK try and implement major changes to try and resuscitate their IPL 2025 campaign? It would be against their DNA, believes former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden.

“I doubt we’ll see major changes—it’s just not in CSK’s DNA. Their approach will likely be: back yourselves, trust the process. They might not be the team that scores 60 runs in the powerplay, but they have to find a point of difference. Without change, it becomes insanity—doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Whether they recognise and act on that is still uncertain, but something clearly needs to shift,” said Hayden.

What has also hurt Chennai this season is that they have now lost three games in a row at Chepauk, their home stadium.

Their aversion to making major changes in the middle of the season notwithstanding, Chennai have had to adapt radically after their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a fractured elbow. CSK appointed longtime talisman Mahendra Singh Dhoni as their captain for the rest of the IPL season and have brought in 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for Gaikwad.
