Legendary Indian cricketer and former captain MS Dhoni recalled the incident from IPL 2019 where he lost his cool and entered the field of play to argue with the on-field umpires over a controversial no-ball decision. The incident took place during the last over of the Rajasthan Royals-Chennai Super Kings match played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 11, 2019.

CSK needed 8 runs from three balls when Ben Stokes bowled a no ball. The umpire, after initially declaring it as a no ball, changed his decision, which invited a strong reaction from Dhoni, who stormed onto the field to confront the umpires. As a result of his shocking behaviour, he was slapped with a fine of 50% of his match fees.

Recalling that incident during a recent event, Dhoni, when asked by Mandira Bedi “if he ever lost his cool?” said, “Lots of time. It has happened; one of the IPL games, it happened. I just walked on the field. So that was a big mistake.”

“But other than that, also, there have been instances where something gets triggered because we play a sport where the stakes are very high; you’re supposed to win every game,” he added.

Dhoni to play on March 23

Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL title wins, will play for the Men in Yellow in the upcoming 2025 edition of the cash-rich league. He was retained for Rs 4 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

CSK will face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in their first match of IPL 2025 on Sunday (March 23). The high-voltage match between the two most successful teams in the tournament’s history is set to take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

During the upcoming season of IPL, Dhoni, who is the most capped player in IPL history, will have a chance to break Suresh Raina’s record of 4687 runs and become CSK’s leading run scorer in IPL. Dhoni has scored 4669 runs in 234 IPL matches for CSK, and he needs 18 more runs to go past Raina’s tally.
