Mumbai Indians’ former captain Rohit Sharma has set his sights on a record-extending seventh IPL title, making a strong statement about his ambition for the
IPL 2025 season. Rohit has five IPL titles as captain of Mumbai Indians and one as a player with Deccan Chargers, a now-defunct team. Although Rohit is no longer MI’s skipper, he is determined to win another title for the team.
Speaking to MI TV, Rohit Sharma emphasised his commitment to bringing back the championship glory to the franchise after a disappointing IPL 2024 campaign.
“My immediate goal is obviously to try and bring the glory back to MI, win the trophy here. But we do understand it takes a lot of hard work. It needs a lot of things to click together. That is the challenge of the IPL. To win 17 games is like half the T20 season, but you play that in two months. So that is a challenge. There’s a lot of boxes which you need to tick and then get to the trophy,” Rohit said.
Reflecting on MI’s IPL 2024 debacle
Mumbai Indians had a disastrous IPL 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table under Hardik Pandya’s leadership. Hardik, who had returned to MI after a successful two-season stint with Gujarat Titans, where he led the franchise to an IPL title in their debut season, was named captain in place of Rohit Sharma. However, the leadership change did not sit well with MI fans, and Hardik faced significant backlash throughout the season.
Reflecting on the tough times, Rohit said the importance of moving forward and maintaining a positive mindset, regardless of setbacks, will be very important for the team in upcoming matches. Mumbai Indians lost their opening game of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings.
“It is a very simple line, but it means a lot. Whatever happens, at the end of the day, you have to find a way to smile, be happy, and find peace with it. That is why, at MI, when we speak about this as players, as a team, we always talk about finding a way to move on, whether we win or we lose. Moving on from a loss, from a low is not easy. How you motivate yourself at that time, how you cheer yourself up, how you bring a smile to your face is important because life doesn’t end here. After a low, the sun will rise again the next day. You will have to wake up again and find a way to fight the day. If you can find a way to forget that moment and smile, nothing like it,” he added.
Mumbai Indians are playing Gujarat Titans (GT) in their second game of IPL 2025 in Ahmedabad on Saturday, 29 March.
