The contentious impact player rule in the IPL has been extended till 2027 and among the plethora of players who have voiced out their concerns against the same, legendary South Africa batter AB de Villiers also stated that he is not a fan of the concept.
There have been growing voices of concern suggesting that the rule is massively favoring the batters and slowly killing the impact of all-rounders, with players such as Rohit Sharma, and even the legendary Jonty Rhodes voicing out their concerns against the same.
One of the biggest criticisms against the rule has been the fact that all-rounders have been a rare commodity in India and the Impact Player rule has further diminished their participation in the IPL. Then the question that arises is it a wise choice to put players under the pump just for the sake of instantaneous entertainment?
When asked if the rule should be introduced in SA20, de Villiers also expressed his disinterest in the rule.
“I’ve never been a big fan, to be honest, and I did speak about it at the IPL last season. I feel it’s a bit confusing, it also puts a bit of pressure on the all-rounders and their role in the teams,” stated de Villiers.
“From the outside it looks exciting, but actually when the game takes place, I’ve never found it to be… a good thing to have in cricket. So, I mean, you can try it out. And the SA20, they’ve always been open to new ideas and new rules, which I find good,” he said.
The SA20, South Africa’s premier T20 cricket league, returns for its exciting third edition, promising fans another action-packed season. The tournament begins on January 9, 2025, with an electrifying opening match between the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, and MI Cape Town at St George’s Park.
