Rajasthan Royals (RR) coach Rahul Dravid picked up a leg injury while playing a local cricket match for Vijaya Cricket Club (Malur) in a Third Division (Group I) match for the Nassur Memorial Shield in February. The franchise revealed the news with a post on social media where they also confirmed that he was about to join their pre-IPL 2025 season camp in Jaipur on Wednesday.
Dravid gave his fans a pleasant surprise by turning up for the club in the local match and playing alongside his son Anvay. In that match, Dravid senior, who came to bat at No 6, made 10 off eight balls with a boundary but Anvay scored 58 off 60 balls with eight fours as Vijaya amassed 345 for seven against Young Lions Club. It’s unclear, though, if he picked up the injury in the same match.
“Head Coach Rahul Dravid, who picked up an injury while playing Cricket in Bangalore, is recovering well and will join us today in Jaipur,” the Royals said in the social media post where Dravid was seen wearing heavy strapping in his left leg.

Dravid, who was in Guwahati for the Rajasthan Royals’ pre-season camp, returned to the city for a few days in February. Anvay is a wicketkeeper-batter, while Samit, the elder son of Dravid, is a pace-bowling all-rounder.
There are several instances of father-son duo playing in the same match at various levels such as WG Grace-Grace Jr, Lala-Surinder Amarnath, Dennis-Adam Lillee, Denis-Heath Streak, Shivnarine-Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Ian-Liam Botham among others.
Dravid took over the Royals’ head coach spot ahead of the IPL 2025 season, soon after stepping down at the helm of the national team following the 2024 men’s T20 World Cup triumph. Dravid, who has been a former captain and mentor at the Royals, would aim to help the team get over the line in the 2025 season.
The Royals will start their season away against SunRisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on March 23.
