NEW DELHI: On a day when Rohit Sharma became the second-most capped player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, he also etched his name into an unwanted record.
In Mumbai Indians’ season opener against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, Rohit was dismissed for a four-ball duck by pacer Khaleel Ahmed in the very first over.

This dismissal marked Rohit’s 18th duck in the IPL, equalling the dubious record held by Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell for the most ducks in the tournament’s history.
Most Ducks in the IPL
- 18 – Rohit Sharma (MI)
- 18 – Glenn Maxwell (RCB)
- 18 – Dinesh Karthik (RCB)
- 16 – Piyush Chawla (MI)
- 16 – Sunil Narine (KKR)
The dismissal also marked Rohit’s first T20 outing since India’s T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa in Barbados. Despite his personal setback, the milestone of becoming the second-most capped player in IPL history was a significant achievement. Making his 258th appearance, Rohit surpassed Dinesh Karthik (257 matches) and now trails only MS Dhoni, who leads with 265 IPL appearances.
Rohit’s IPL journey began in 2008 with Deccan Chargers before he became the face of Mumbai Indians, leading them to a record five IPL titles. Over 17 seasons, he has accumulated 6,628 runs, including two centuries, and has maintained a solid average of 29.72. Renowned for his leadership and consistency, Rohit has also showcased his all-round capabilities with early-career bowling performances and over 100 catches.
