Ahead of the start of the 252-run chase in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, here’s a look at India’s record while chasing in three ICC finals played so far.

India is taking on New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday, March 9. In the match currently underway at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bat first. The Black Caps rode on Daryl Mitchell’s 63 and Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten 53-run knock to post a total of 251 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets in 50 overs.
The Rohit Sharma-led side now needs to chase down 252 runs in 50 overs to win the match and become Champions Trophy winners for the record-extending third time.
Before India start the 252-run chase in the ongoing match at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, here’s a look at India’s record while batting second in ICC finals:
2003 ODI World Cup
India faced Australia in the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup, which was played at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on March 23. India captain Sourav Ganguly invited Ricky Ponting & Co. to bat first in the summit clash, and the Aussies rode on Ponting’s unbeaten 140-run knock to post a total of 359 runs on the board for the loss of just two wickets. Apart from Ponting, No. 4 batter Damien Martyn scored 88 runs, and Adam Gilchrist contributed 57 runs from 48 balls. The 360-run target was a big one for India to chase down, and the Indian team got all out for 234 in 39.2 overs. In the match that Men in Yellow won by 125 runs, Virender Sehwag top-scored for India by making 82 runs from 81 balls.
2011 ODI World Cup
India chased down the target of 275 runs in 48.2 overs against Sri Lanka to win the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup. Gautam Gambhir top-scored for Men in Blue in the match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2. He hammered 97 runs from 122 balls, and India captain MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91 runs from 79 balls.
2017 Champions Trophy
In the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, Indian captain Virat Kohli opted to field first, after which Pakistan, riding on Fakhar Zaman’s 114-run knock, posted a total of 338/4 at The Oval. The 339-run target proved too much for the Indian team, and they went on to lose the match by 180 runs after getting bowled out for 158 runs in 30.3 overs.
In addition to the above-mentioned three matches, India also batted second in the 2002 Champions Trophy finals against Sri Lanka, which was played twice at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo due to rain. But both matches ended in a draw due to rain in the second half, and both teams were then declared joint winners.
