The second T20I of the ongoing five-match series between India and England is scheduled to take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, January 25. During the second T20I, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav will have a chance to join Rohit Sharma in an elite list. If the 34-year-old right-handed batter manages to hit at least five sixes, then he will become the second Indian and overall fourth batter in the world to hit 150 sixes in the shortest format of the game.
Surya, who made his T20I debut for India against England in March 2021 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, has 145 sixes to his name in 79 matches played so far. The record of hitting most sixes in the shortest format of the game is held by Rohit. The captain of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning team finished his T20I career with 205 sixes in 159 matches. The 37-year-old right-handed batter is the only cricketer in the world to smash more than 200 sixes in the 20-over format of the game.
New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Muhammad Waseem of the UAE are the only two other batters who have crossed the 150-sixes mark in T20Is. While Guptill called time on his 13-year-long T20I career earlier this month with 173 sixes to his name, Waseem has scored 158 maximums in 69 T20Is played so far.
Most sixes in T20Is
- Rohit Sharma (India) – 205
- Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 173
- Muhammad Waseem (UAE) – 158
- Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) – 149
- Jos Buttler (England) – 148
- Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 145
- Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 137
- David Miller (South Africa) – 130
- Paul Stirling (Ireland) – 129
- Aaron Finch (Australia) – 125
England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, has 148 sixes to his name in 130 matches, and he will also have a chance to cross the 150-sixes mark during the second match of the series.
Buttler was in red-hot form in the series opener played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, January 22. After coming out to bat at No. 3, he scored 68 runs from 44 balls. During his stay at the crease in the first match, Buttler hammered eight fours and two sixes, but his effort went in vain as India chased down the target of 133 runs in just 12.5 overs for the loss of three wickets.
Abhishek Sharma top-scored for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side in the first match, but the left-handed batter suffered an ankle injury on Friday during India’s practice session and is a doubtful starter for the second match.
