The Indian cricket team stands on the brink of history as they take on New Zealand in the
ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (9 March).
No team has won the Champions Trophy three times, with India and Australia being the joint highest winners so far with two titles each. If India beat New Zealand in Dubai, then they will become the first ever team to win the Champions Trophy thrice.

Their first Champions Trophy win came in 2002 when they shared the title with Sri Lanka as rain washed out the final on the scheduled as well as the reserve days.
Their second Champions Trophy win came in 2013 when they defeated England in the final under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Kohli can break multiple records in Champions Trophy final
Meanwhile, star India batter Virat Kohli, who has scored 217 runs in the 2025 edition, is on the brink of breaking Chris Gayle’s record to become the highest-ever run-getter in Champions Trophy history.
Chris Gayle holds the record of being the highest run-getter in Champions Trophy history with 791 runs. Kohli already has 746 runs to his name and needs 46 runs more to etch a new record.
Kohli is also second in the list of Indian batters with most runs against New Zealand in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar leads the tally with 1,750 runs and Kohli has scored 1,656 runs so far. Kohli is only 94 runs behind Tendulkar.
Kohli nears Sangakkara’s ODI runs tally
The former India captain Kohli is just 54 runs behind the great Kumar Sangakkara in the list of batters with the most runs in ODIs. Sangakkara scored 14,234 runs in his ODI career and sits in the second spot behind Tendulkar (18,426). Kohli is third with 14,180 runs.
Kohli has seven fifties in the tournament. One more will equal the record for most in Champions Trophy history.
