Jason Gillespie is not interested in any full-time coaching job after a frustrating experience with the Pakistan Test team. Former Aussies pacer Gillespie took over as Pakistan Test team coach in April 2024 but
stepped down in December after his role was reduced significantly.
Gillespie doesn’t want full-time coaching roles after Pakistan experience
Gillespie has said that the Pakistan experience has “soured” his love for full-time coaching and even an Australia offer may not be enough to tempt him back.
“Right now, I’m not sure I’m interested in coaching full time. [Even if Australia come calling] No, I’m not interested,” he said on Wisden’s Patreon podcast.
“The Pakistan experience has soured my love for coaching, I’ll be honest. I’ll get it back, I’m sure I will, but that was really a blow. It really disappointed me how that all ended,” he added.
Gillespie had recently also criticised the current head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, Aaqib Javed, for
scheming behind his back to take over the coaching role. Gillespie’s criticism came after Javed lamented a lack of consistency with coaches and selectors after Pakistan’s shambolic performance in the Champions Trophy 2025.
“Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats,” Gillespie wrote on social media. “He is a clown.”
While he may not be interested in full-time coaching, Gillespie won’t mind working with T20 teams in franchise leagues.
“I’ve been coaching full-time for the best part of 15 years; I just think that it’s time I did something else,” he said.
Pakistan cricket team, meanwhile, is having a tough time in international cricket. After finishing last in their group in the Champions Trophy, they recently lost seven out of eight matches on the tour of New Zealand.
Pakistan lost the T20I series 4-1 and suffered a 3-0 clean sweep in the ODI series.
