Virat Kohli came out to bat at No. 4 for India in the ongoing fifth Test against Australia on Friday (January 3) at the Sydney Cricket Ground and escaped a golden duck. Scott Boland bowled a superb delivery that kissed the edge of Kohli’s bat and travelled straight to first slip, where Steve Smith was fielding.
The former Australian captain completed Kohli’s right by diving to his right, but during the process the ball touched the ground. After watching multiple replays, Kohli was declared not out by the third umpire, Joel Wilson.
Kohli, who is India’s fourth-leading run scorer in the five-day format of the game, has been struggling with form these days. He scored a century in the second innings of the first Test at Optus Stadium in Perth, but apart from that, he has registered scores of 5, 7, 11, 3, 36, and 5 runs.
Kohli came out to bat in the morning session on Friday (January 3) after Scott Boland removed Yashasvi Jaiswal on the fourth ball of his first over of the match. Jaiswal, who top-scored for India in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test, could only manage to score 10 runs from 26 balls before being caught in the slips by debutant Beau Webster.
Webster was included in Australia’s playing XI in place of Mitchell Marsh, who scored a four-ball duck in the second innings of the fourth Test.
Rahul out for 4
Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and opted to bat first in the fifth Test against Australia. But his decision turned out to be a disaster after KL Rahul returned back to the pavilion on the last ball of the fifth over. Rahul handed a simple catch to Sam Konstas, who was fielding inside the 30-yard circle. Rahul faced a total of 14 balls during his stay at the crease and scored four runs.
Rohit ‘opts to rest’
Rohit Sharma is not playing in the fifth and final Test against Australia. According to Bumrah, Rohit has opted to rest.
“Obviously, our captain (Rohit Sharma) has shown his leadership as well. He’s opted to rest in this game. So that shows that there’s a lot of unity in our team. There’s no selfishness. Whatever is in the team’s best interest, we’re looking to do that,” Bumrah said during the toss.
