Donovan Ferreira’s stunning catch in SA20 (X Screengrab)
Donovan Ferreira lit up the SA20 with his astonishing fielding on Thursday, January 16. The Joburg Super Kings star took a stunning catch during the rain-spoiled match against Pretoria Capitals at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The moment unfolded in the final over of the first innings. Facing Hardus Viljoen, Pretoria’s Senuran Muthusamy smashed the ball hard towards the long-on region. The South African all-rounder failed to generate power and didn’t get enough elevation.
Positioned at the mid-on, Ferreira pulled off a well-timed jump with his right hand in the air and the ball directly stuck into his clasp. A clip featuring his incredible attempt was dropped on the official X handle of SA20. “Joburg Super Kings + Spectacular One-handed catches = same WhatsApp group,” read the caption of the post.
Muthusamy managed to survive just seven deliveries and scored 8 runs, hitting one boundary. Apart from taking the breathtaking catch, Ferreira also impressed with his bowling in the home game against Pretoria Capitals. He was brought into the attack in the first over and went on to dismiss Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a golden duck.
The right-arm spinner struck in his second spell as well. In the last ball of the 17th over, Ferreira took the wicket of Jimmy Neesham who had scored 30 off 12 deliveries. Kyle Verreynne was the top scorer for Pretoria with 39 runs. Liam Livingstone also made a valuable contribution of 22 runs while the majority of his teammates returned with a single-digit score.
Besides Ferreira, Moeen Ali claimed two wickets for Joburg, conceding only 21 runs in four overs. David Wiese, Evan Jones, Imran Tahir and Viljoen each picked one scalp. Courtesy of their dominant bowling, Pretoria Capitals were restricted to 133 runs at a loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.
It was looking like an easy chase for Joburg Super Kings but the rain played a spoilsport in the second innings. The match never started, forcing the two teams to share the points. After playing three matches, Joburg remain at the top of the SA20 standings with 10 points. Pretoria Capitals, on the other hand, hold the third spot, having managed one victory in four matches.
