Vignesh Puthur, a surprise inclusion in the team, helped Mumbai Indians (MI) give Chennai Super Kings a tough fight by taking three wickets in the
Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Puthur was not a part of Mumbai Indians’ playing XI but came on as an Impact Sub, replacing former captain Rohit Sharma during the second innings. MI scored 155/9 batting first, but Puthur brought them back into the game with three wickets, dismissing CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda.

Puthur picked up the wicket of Gaikwad in his first over on his IPL debut. And ended his bowling with figures of 3/32 from four overs as MI lost by four wickets.

Who is Mumbai Indians spinner Vignesh Puthur?

Puthur is a 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner from Malappuram in Kerala. He was signed for Rs 30 lakh by MI in the IPL 2025 auction.

The spinner is yet to play for Kerala senior team, having only represented the state at the under-14 and under-19 levels. What makes his inclusion in the IPL more special is that he was scouted while playing for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League.

He, however, only took two wickets from three matches in the KCL.

Puthur’s journey to KCL was charted after consistently doing well for the Jolly Rovers Cricket Club.

He has also played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

According to reports, Puthur comes from a humble background, with his father working as an auto-rickshaw driver. He was a pacer at the start and took to spin bowling after advice from local cricketer Mohammed Sherif.
