Mumbai Indians dominate the wicket-taking charts as the star New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr pipped her teammate Hayley Matthews to win the purple cap at the end of the Women’s Premier League 2025 season with the win over Delhi Capitals by 8 runs in Mumbai on Saturday.
Both Kerr and Matthews were gunning for the race to be the highest wicket-taker. Kerr finished with two massive wickets, while Matthews took one in the big finale as both bowlers took 18 wickets each in the 2025 season. But it was Kerr who took the purple cap, thanks to the lesser number of runs conceded in her bowling.
Matthews, who won the purple cap during the Mumbai Indians’ inaugural title-winning season, narrowly finished at the second spot despite having a season’s best tally.
Delhi Capitals’ Jess Jonassen continued to have a stellar campaign with the ball as she finished with 13 wickets to become the third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. Coming up in fourth is Mumbai Indians’ star English all-rounder who made the jump up thanks to her match-winning bowling display, picking up three wickets for 30 runs in her four overs. She struck early to get rid of Meg Lanning in the second over and followed it up late in the innings with back-to-back blows to get rid of the dangerous Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey.
The West Indies all-rounder was impressive with the ball as she created a new record for the most wickets taken in a single season of the WPL, going past her previous best tally of 16 wickets in the 2023 season.
