The third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to take place from February 14 – March 15.
Five teams — Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and UP Warriorz — will compete across 22 games across four venues — Vadodara, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Mumbai.
Here’s a look at the two players who have succeeded in taking hat-tricks in the two season of the WPL:
Issy Wong (Mumbai Indians)
Issy Wong, the England all-rounder, completed the first-ever hat-trick in the WPL, which guided eventual title-winner Mumbai to the 2023 final. After opening her account with the dismissal of UP Warriorz’s skipper Alyssa Healy, Wong struck thrice in the 13th over with the wickets of the well-set Kiran Navgire, Simran Shaikh and Ecclestone.
Navigre, who kept the momentum going for UP, went for a big shot on a full toss and was caught at the boundary. Shaikh was castled with a full delivery and Ecclestone couldn’t protect her wicket and was dismissed for a golden duck with her stumps broken.
Deepti Sharma (UP Warriorz)
Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the first Indian to take a hat-trick in the WPL, which helped UP Warrioirz claim a thrilling one-run win over Delhi Capitals in 2024. Deepti executed the hat-trick across two spells, starting with the prized wicket of Delhi’s captain Meg Lanning who was finding runs with ease.
On the last ball of the 14th over, Lanning, who was on 60 from 46 balls, was trapped in front. Returning in the penultimate over, Sutherland misjudged the length ball that clattered into the middle stump. On the second ball, Arundhati failed to get a clean connection and was caught.
